Launched in 1925 by perfumer Auguste Michel, Red Moscow perfume evolved from an earlier imperial fragrance (Bouquet Imperatrix) created for the Romanov dynasty by the Brocard factory before it was nationalized and renamed.
French perfumer Ernest Beaux, who originally worked at the elite A. Rallet & Co. factory in Moscow, fled the Bolshevik Revolution for France. He brought his imperial research with him, using newly advanced synthetic aldehydes to alter the formula. In Paris, he presented these modifications to Coco Chanel, who chose his fifth sample—yielding Chanel No. 5.
Auguste Michel chose to stay behind in revolutionary Russia. Tasked with modernizing the state's factory, he reworked the same 1913 imperial template. Relaunched in 1925 as Krasnaya Moskva, his formula leaned into rich, dense natural ingredients rather than the sweeping synthetic transparency of Chanel.
